The World Needs New Perspectives. Add Yours.
The AUP graduate education values cross-border thinking and acknowledges that communication and professionalism function differently in international environments. It provides space and time to reflect on learned theory in multiple contexts through sustained engagement with the practical applications of a field. Students deepen their learning, acquire specializations with wide applicability, and cultivate autonomy. They graduate as masters of their field, providing much-needed new perspectives to the industries, organizations and communities in which they choose to work.

Mastering Theory & Practice
At AUP, students are treated as rising professionals and are encouraged to share their differing viewpoints, experiences and contexts in response to theoretical debates. This is a key tenet of our modern dialectical approach to learning that reinforces the importance of considering multiple perspectives and viewpoints in order to arrive at a more comprehensive understanding of a field, subject or issue.
By conducting reasoned debate that confronts conflicting ideas, students engage in the pursuit of truth, and ultimately become well-informed individuals. This approach recognizes that truth is often complex and multifaceted and that learning is an ongoing, dynamic process. At AUP, this process is front and center in the daily classroom experience. As such, dialectical learning involves engaging in a process of questioning, examining and synthesizing different ideas, and is often characterized by dialogue and debate, critical thinking and reflection, which are all center stage in the AUP classroom. By embracing a dialectical learning style, our students develop a more open-minded, adaptable and flexible approach to analysis and problem-solving in their careers, which ultimately leads to deeper insights, greater creativity, and higher adaptability, which are all crucial to successfully navigating international careers today.
Classroom Environment: Discussion in small groups facilitated by mentoring faculty.
Academic Resources: Students craft their own pathways through master’s studies supported by academic, career and experiential resources.
Experiential Learning as Standard
In considering varying theories and their own position with respect to them, students gain opportunities to navigate multiple perspectives and translate concepts between cultures before putting them into practice. But theory is never isolated from practice with the AUP education. Living in Paris is a constant opportunity to engage with art, culture, history and politics; students learn to see the impact of the application of theoretical concepts in all aspects of their daily lives. That’s what subject mastery means to us, and that’s why AUP’s master’s degrees are structured in a way that gives students time and space to reflect on the theory they learn in class and apply it to their lived experiences both personally and professionally. Students benefit from a wide range of hands-on experiences outside of the classroom, meaning they practice their field as much as they study it. These include:
Graduate Study Trips: Students put theory into practice outside of the classroom with in-depth, career-focused field experience.
Internships and Partnerships: Visits to relevant institutions in Paris and beyond and internships with world-leading international companies.
Learning French: Students are able to make the most of living in France’s cosmopolitan capital by taking on the additional challenge of learning French outside of AUP.
Our Faculty
Faculty mentorship supports students in constructing their own pathways to mastery in their chosen field. In this way, students reflect on their own contributions to classroom discussion and engage in rigorous discussion with our expert faculty, often taking part in collaborative research projects directly. It’s a proven way of developing employable skills through immersion in professional contexts.
